Septic tank or conservancy tank
A septic tank treats waste and releases the liquid into a soakaway or French drain. A conservancy tank only stores waste and must be pumped out by a honey sucker.
Size for the people using it
Choose capacity for the number of people the building serves at its busiest, not on an average day.
Soil and position
A soakaway needs soil that drains. Keep the system well away from boreholes, wells and streams, at the distances your municipality sets.
Septic Tanks: common questions
Do I need approval to install a septic tank?
Yes. Sanitation installations fall under the National Building Regulations (SANS 10400-P), so plans go to your municipality, which also sets distances from boreholes and boundaries.
