Solar Packages buying guide

Hectare lists 190 solar packages, priced from R403 to R7 777 449 including VAT, from brands including Deye, Sunsynk, Saj, Must. Orders are dispatched from Bloemfontein to all nine provinces and to Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Lesotho and Eswatini.

Size the inverter to your load

Add up what must run at the same time: a kettle draws about 2 kW and a geyser about 3 kW. A 5 kW inverter runs a typical home without the geyser and oven; 8 kW to 12 kW covers larger homes, and three-phase packages suit farms and workshops.

Size the battery to your hours

Battery kWh is roughly your average load in kW multiplied by the hours of backup you want. Lights, fridge, TV and Wi-Fi at about 1 kW for 5 hours need around 5 kWh of usable storage. Lithium (LiFePO4) batteries let you use most of their rated capacity.

Panels

The panel array charges the battery and cuts daytime grid use. More panels mean more daytime power and faster recharging, within the inverter’s PV input limit.

Installation and sign-off

The system must be connected by a registered electrician who issues a Certificate of Compliance, and many municipalities require hybrid systems to be registered with them.

What size solar system do I need for a house?

Most family homes start with a 5 kW hybrid inverter and a 5 kWh to 10 kWh lithium battery. Keep the geyser and oven on the grid or gas, or step up to 8 kW and more if they must run on the inverter.

Can I install a solar package myself?

You can plan and mount panels, but the connection to your home’s wiring must be done and signed off by a registered electrician.
