How big a tank?

Multiply your daily use by the number of days you want covered. A home using 600 L a day that wants five days of backup needs about a 3 000 L tank.

Prepare the base

A full tank weighs a kilogram per litre, so a 5 000 L tank puts five tonnes on its base. Use a flat, level concrete slab or compacted base that supports the whole floor of the tank.

Food-grade and UV-resistant

Drinking-water tanks should be food-grade, UV-stabilised polyethylene. A dark inner lining limits algae and keeps water fresher.

Harvesting rainwater

Fit gutter guards, a leaf catcher and a first-flush diverter so the first dirty water off the roof does not end up in the tank.

What base does a water tank need?

A flat, level surface that supports the entire base, such as a concrete slab or a level compacted base free of stones. An uneven base can damage the tank and void the manufacturer’s warranty.
