Trailers buying guide

Hectare lists 168 trailers, priced from R14 850 to R245 000 including VAT, from brands including Dicla Agri Machinery. Orders are dispatched from Durban to all nine provinces and to Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Lesotho and Eswatini.

Which trailer do you need?

Utility and multi-purpose trailers carry garden refuse, building material and farm loads. Car and vehicle trailers have ramps and tie-down points. Cattle and livestock trailers have ventilated sides and non-slip floors. Closed and cargo trailers lock and keep stock dry. Mobile kitchen and food trailers are built for trading, and water and diesel bowsers carry liquids to where the work is.

Braked or unbraked?

In South Africa a trailer with a gross vehicle mass (GVM) above 750 kg must have brakes. Unbraked trailers are lighter and cheaper and suit cars and bakkies carrying light loads. Braked trailers, usually with over-run brakes, carry from about 1 000 kg up to 3 500 kg GVM, provided your tow vehicle is rated for it.

Check your tow vehicle and licence

The towing capacity in your vehicle manual and the GVM on the trailer plate decide what you can legally pull. A Code B licence covers light trailers up to 750 kg GVM; heavier trailers need a Code EB licence. Check both before you choose a size.

Registration and delivery

Every trailer used on a public road must be registered and licensed. Trailers travel by road, so we quote delivery to your address before you pay, from Durban to all nine provinces and to Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Lesotho and Eswatini.

Trailers: common questions

What does GVM mean on a trailer?

Gross vehicle mass is the most the trailer may weigh fully loaded, including its own weight. The payload you can carry is the GVM minus the tare (empty) mass.

Which trailer suits a bakkie?

A 2.5 m to 3 m single-axle utility trailer with a 750 kg GVM suits most bakkie work. For cattle, building material or a vehicle, choose a braked tandem-axle trailer and confirm your bakkie’s braked towing capacity first.
