One thousand and seventy kilograms is the figure that separates this model from everything below it. The braked flatdeck trailer in 3/4 ton 14 inch form carries the same 2 360 mm by 1 400 mm body as the unbraked model, but the published technical specification adds run in brakes, a ten blade 36 inch leaf pack and 195 x 14 inch six stud wheels, lifting gross vehicle mass to 1 070 kg and published payload to 750 kg.

Two published notes we are not going to hide

First, the supplier description line for this model carries the word unbraked, while the technical block for the same model lists run in brakes at a 1 070 kg gross vehicle mass. We have built this page on the technical block, because a gross rating above 750 kg cannot be operated without a braking system under the National Road Traffic Act. Second, the published tare is 320 kg, exactly the same as the unbraked version, even though this build adds brakes, two more spring blades and larger wheels. Both points are worth confirming in writing before an order, and we do that as a matter of course.

What run in brakes do on the road

An over run or run in system uses the trailer pushing against the tow hitch to apply its own drums, so the trailer helps to stop itself instead of shoving the tow vehicle through the stop street. On a 750 kg load that is the difference between a comfortable descent and a nervous one, particularly on a loaded gravel pass. It also unlocks the payload: without brakes the same body is legally capped at 750 kg gross and 430 kg of load.

Features

  • Load bed of 2 360 mm by 1 400 mm, deep enough for a pallet laid square
  • Run in braking system with a 1 070 kg gross vehicle mass rating
  • Ten blade 36 inch leaf springs on a wide 1 700 mm axle
  • 195 x 14 inch six stud wheels with a matching spare wheel included
  • Body and floor in 1.6 mm corrosion resistant electro galvanised sheet steel
  • Tailgate folds down flat for loading

Payload and licensing

At 1 070 kg gross this trailer is above the 750 kg mark, which is where South African law starts to treat a trailer differently. Braking is required, the combination mass matters, and the conditions attached to towing it are set out in the National Road Traffic Act extract linked above. We do not quote licence codes on product pages because the answer depends on your existing licence and on the tow vehicle, but you should check both before buying. The 750 kg published payload is a legal maximum, not a target.

Where it sits in the flatdeck range

Below it sits the same body with no brakes and 430 kg of payload for about six thousand rand less, which is the cheaper answer if you never load past a third of a ton. Above it, the 1 ton flatdeck trailer with a 2 400 mm deck moves to an 1 800 kg axle, a twelve blade pack and a 1 600 kg gross rating for a published 1 000 kg payload. The braked utility trailer category holds both, arranged by gross rating.

What the extra money buys

A budget range in this catalogue does similar work at roughly half the price, and for light occasional loads it is the right buy. The money on this unit goes into a braked axle rather than an unbraked one, ten spring blades instead of six or eight, a six stud hub on a common light commercial tyre size, galvanised sheet steel on body and floor, and a published tare and gross vehicle mass you can present at a weighbridge or to an insurer. Braking in particular is not an option you can retrofit cheaply later.
